"Speaking Truth to Power: On Fact, Fiction and Poetry in the Political Prints” and “On Myth and Modernism: The Zulu Series” in Gavin Jantjes: To Be Free! A Retrospective 1970 - 2023

Published by Skira Editore with The Africa Institute and Sharjah Art Foundation, 2025

Two essays in the accompanying catalogue for Gavin Jantjes: To Be Free! A Retrospective 1970 - 2023, organized by The Africa Institute and Sharjah Art Foundation and curated by Salah M. Hassan.

Across paintings, prints and drawings, Jantjes' journey embodies a quest for artistic emancipation freed from Eurocentric traditions and expectations of Black creativity. Through over 100 works in addition to archival material, To Be Free! celebrates Gavin Jantjes (born 1948) while tracing his development as a painter, printmaker, writer and activist―from his childhood in Cape Town under apartheid to his compelling portrayals of the global Black struggle for freedom and his recent transition to nonfigurative painting.

Contributions by Salah M. Hassan, Allison K. Young, Kendel Geers, Lars Elton, Dag Erik Elgin and Premesh Lalu.
